Feel-Good Gospel

27 02 2007

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.”
(2 Timothy 4:3,4)

The true gospel is a call to self-denial. It is not a call to self-fulfillment. And that puts it in opposition to the contemporary evangelical gospel, where ministers view Jesus as a utilitarian genie. You rub the lamp, and He jumps out and says you have whatever you want; you give Him your list and He delivers…

I reviewed that book [Robert Schuller’s, Self-Esteem: The New Reformation, Word, 1982] for a national magazine. I thought Schuller’s view was a turning point, literally, as the title says, an attempt to promote a new reformation. It was an effort to replace the biblical gospel with a new gospel. And it worked.

In that book, Robert Schuller attacked the Protestant Reformation. Calling for a new reformation he wrote: “It is precisely at this point that classical theology has erred in its insistence that theology be ‘God-centered’ and not ‘man-centered'”

To define man-centered theology (an oxymoron), he wrote further, “This master plan of God is designed around the deepest need of human beings—self-dignity, self-respect, self-worth and self-esteem.” For Schuller, the pearl of great price is self-respect and self-esteem…

It’s a kind of quasi-Christian narcissism, or self-love…“Dangerous times will come for men will become lovers of themselves” (2 Timothy 3:1,2)

It is a small step form his self-centeredness to atheism. This is evident in other areas.

Watch the paroxysms of joy that atheists and God-deniers are going through over the alleged discovery of Christ’s remains. Then think on this:

“For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” II Thessalonians 2: 11-12.

Now watch how they take joy in “killing” God. How they revile those who continue to believe, while they worship their own reason.

For me, what becomes interesting is seeing things played out over again that had already been acted out(the world a stage). I knew enough to stay away from the error but not enough to correct it biblically. Saying this, am just wandering if it would be right to categorize this teaching as the social gospel from the modernist revolt against the bible? Yep-see the same thing going on within the postmodern emergent church! Thanks for allowing me to intrude a bit. God bless Dave Emme

I tend to think that the more I know God’s love for me the less I will be self-centered. If God loves me I don’t have to focus on loving myself but can focus on loving God and others.

Amen, J.,

Isn’t it interesting that GOD sends the delusion? In that same Thessalonian text is the word that serves as a stark warning: this happened to them because “they did not receive the love of the Truth.” (v10) And Truth is a Person–Jesus Christ. I will check out your site. Thanks for the response and for a kindred passion for Truth!

Saint Sophia,

Thank you for this true word today. Loving God is the supremest and highest joy! And what we were created for! As we love Him, we are most fulfilled in all things!

To His praise!
Scott

P.S. BTW, read your “about me” page and was truly moved. God is doing this in MANY in these last days…
