Unmanageable

27 04 2011

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever…”
(Deuteronomy 29:29)

To admit that there is One who lies beyond us, Who exists outside all our categories, Who will not be dismissed with a name, Who will not appear before the bar of our reason, nor submit to our curious inquiries: this requires a great deal of humility, more than most of us possess, so we save face by thinking God down to our level, or at least down to where we can manage Him.

Into the Looking Glass

25 04 2011

The LORD your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. He celebrates and sings   because of you, and he will refresh your life with his love.
(Zephaniah 3:17, CEV)

“This love of God to His Son must serve, o my soul, as the glass in which you are to learn how Jesus loves you. As one of His redeemed ones, you are His delight, and all His desire is to you with the longing of a love which is stronger than death and which many waters cannot quench. His heart yearns after you, seeking your fellowship and your love…His heart yearns after you, seeking your fellowship and your love…His life is bound up in yours; you are to Him inexpressibly more indispensable and precious than you can ever know.”

–Andrew Murray, Abide in Christ

The Kingdom Imperative

22 04 2011

“You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
(2 Peter 3:17,18)

A church is truly relevant when it seeks first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. It becomes irrelevant when the tangential worries (packaging, PR, what brand of coffee is served in the foyer, etc.) take precedence over living and preaching the biblical gospel.”

–Brett McCracken, Hipster Christianity: When Church and Cool Collide

Buy Truth and Sell It Not

21 04 2011

“But he who practices the Truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested  as having been wrought in God.”
(John 3:21)

Seek the truth
Listen to the truth
Teach the truth
Love the truth
Abide by the truth
And defend the truth
Unto death.

–John Hus

On What Do You Rely?

20 04 2011

“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of  the power will be of God and not from ourselves.”
(2 Corinthians 4:7)

“If you rely on training, you accomplish what training can do. If you rely on skills and hard work, you obtain the results that skills and hard, faithful work can do. When you rely on committees, you get what committees can do. But when you rely on God, you get what God can do.”
–Wesley Duewel

“Unless the Holy Spirit fills, the human spirit fails.”
–E. Stanley Jones

“It is our determination to be independent by being in control that makes us unavailable to God.”
–Richard Neuhaus

Malicious Ministry

19 04 2011

 20“For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 21“For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22“For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, 23so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.”
(John 5:20-23)

“We slander God by our very eagerness to work for Him without knowing Him.”
–Oswald Chambers

O Love Divine, How Sweet Thou Art!

18 04 2011

O love divine, how sweet thou art!

When shall I find my willing heart

All taken up by thee?

I thirst, I faint, I die to prove

The greatness of redeeming love,

The love of Christ to me.

Stronger His love than death or hell;

Its reaches are unsearchable;

The first born sons of light

Desire in vain its depths to see;

They cannot reach the mystery

The length, and breadth, and height.

God only knows the love of God;

O that it now were shed abroad

In this poor stony heart!

For love I sigh, for love I pine;

This only portion, Lord, be mine,

Be mine this better part.

O that I could forever sit

With Mary at the Master’s feet;

Be this my happy choice;

My only care, delight, and bliss,

My joy, my heaven on earth, be this

To hear the Bridegroom’s voice.

O that, with humbled Peter, I

Could weep, believe, and thrice reply,

My faithfulness to prove.

Thou know’st, (for all to Thee is known),

Thou know’st, O Lord, and Thou alone,

Thou know’st that Thee I love.

O that I could, with favored John,

Recline my weary head upon

The dear Redeemer’s breast!

From care, and sin, and sorrow free,

Give me, O Lord, to find in Thee

My everlasting rest.

Thy only love do I require,

Nothing on earth beneath desire,

Nothing in heaven above;

Let earth, and heaven, and all things go,

Give me Thy only love to know,

Give me only Thy love.

–Charles Wesley
